The Faux Poste Project
THE FAUX POSTE PROJECT
Frankly, I'm not sure where I'm going with this, but I think I'm onto something. I'm creating fictional postcards, sometimes the story is on the card, sometimes the story is about the card. Most of the elements on the cards are things I've photographed or have created myself. Occasionally I'll use copyright-free elements, but for the most part, they're all my own stuff. I'm including the "back story" for those of you who are interested in the overall process. It's fun for me, and I hope you enjoy reading the stories.
If you have any thoughts regarding what I can do with this idea (maybe a book?), please let me know. Truly, I'm kind of floundering. In the meantime, I continue making the cards, writing the stories, and having fun. — Carol Leigh

Your uncle was a spy . . . #2
Here's another "secret" message he sent out. Remember "The Order of the Silver Bee?" Well, apparently he also created "The Order of the Red Raven." I know he went overseas a lot. What the heck was he doing? Wait a minute. Nobody held this card over a candle flame, did they? There aren't any burn marks. Maybe there's a clue still on the card! I'll check and will let you know soon. The mystery continues . . .

Mastodons Are On Their Way
I just uploaded this "faux poste" card to Fine Art America this morning. If you'd like to see it larger and to look at the details more closely, that's a good place to do so.
I used my photos of various stamps, stickers, papers, and inks to create this. The background is a photo I took of the inside of an old scrapbook. The store owner told me he had removed all the paper currency that the scrapbook-maker had pasted onto the pages, leaving little bits still clinging to the old, faded, and weathered pages. And it was those old faded pages that caught my heart and compelled me to buy the book. See the little piece of paper over mastodon #3 (from the left)? That's a bit of the currency still hanging on to the scrapbook page.
See the faded orange stamp over mastodon #5 on the right? That's a document stamp that CJ gave me a couple of years ago. All the other stamps are from my own little stash. The beautifully written address on the postcard is a photo I took of an actual postcard, again from my postcard collection. ©Carol Leigh

Jimmy Plays With Boats
The elements here are my photos of a cabinet card (old photo) found at an antique store, photos of postage, cigar labels, numbers, handmade rubber stamps, handwriting, and more. It's the absurdity of the title combined with the postcard that amuses and delights me! ©Carol Leigh

Mammoth Mail
I am trying to create one physical postcard a day. It's a tough go, but I finished this one this morning, then scanned it and added more to it in Photoshop. I have no story for it yet, but the process continues . . . ©Carol Leigh

Your uncle was a spy . . .
Your uncle was a spy, but not a very good one. He sent his secret correspondence on postcards, for crying out loud! No one took him seriously. They should have.
His "Order of the Silver Bee" is just one of the many undercover organizations he formed. As I'm looking through his correspondence, I'm stunned. Will send more soon.
